What is a Camera Crane / Jib?
When referring to film and video production;
The jib, or camera crane is a mechanical device that is used to hold a camera on an extended arm. With the camera, the camera crane / jib is able to rotate around its own axis and move up and down resulting in extremely smooth pans and tilts.
Using a jib for panning, objects in the foreground appear to move faster than the main subject. Objects in the background move slower. The main subject is shown at different angles as the jib pans, giving a highly desirable three dimensional look.
With a jib, you can place a camera in a corner and have it rotate on a remote axis which results in a room looking larger than if using a tripod mounted camera.
Camera moves are smoother than when mounted on a tripod.
The camera is able to move from one location to another while zooming out, rising or descending at the same time, producing incredible footage.
Jibs are commonly used in studio applications, stage productions and commercials.
The jib or camera crane is increasingly finding its way into weddings and Bar / Bat Mitzvah receptions.
